How Mathtech works

1. Support

• When your child is enrolled on one of our courses, admin will call you both via Skype soon after enrolment and will be in regular contact with your child to help them stay on track with their studies.
• If your child has a special educational need, requires extra support in their studies or feels a lack of motivation to study, we offer a variety of options. These include: • study skills coaching; • mentoring; • advice and specialist support for specific learning difficulties. These services are all delivered via Skype and complement the work of our Tutor in helping your child succeed in their studies. If you feel your child would benefit from any of these services, please ask for more information.

2. Online learning platform

  • The Math classes can be conducted online either in weekdays or in weekends through ZOOM, SKYPE, TENCENT, XYLINK or GOOGLE MEET.
  • The link for the classes will be sent before 5 minutes to the start of the class.
  • Please inform the changes or cancellation of the classes at least 2 hours before the scheduled time.
  • Each class will have a duration of ONE hour. If there is any interruption in between the classes, the duration may extend upto 5 to 10 minutes more to the normal schedule.
  • Preferred time slot for the classes on weekdays are from 7 00 PM to 9 PM and for weekends from 9 AM to 9 PM.
  • Homework or worksheets will be shared either through WeChat or through google classroom.
  • Sharing Mathtech resources with others are completely unacceptable.
  • Please pay for at least 5 classes for each transaction. The payment must be done before the start of the class.

3. The program of study

At the beginning of every course, the tutor gives an overview of the subject material your child needs to cover to complete the course. This is the single most important document on any course and your child should follow it closely throughout. It will act as their friendly guide throughout the course.

4. Textbook and resources

Every Mathtech course includes one or more textbooks. For all courses, these are often endorsed by the relevant exam board. We recommend that your child gets to know the textbooks well and completes any activities that are included. Each course will contain additional resources to supplement the textbook. These may be online resources, such as useful websites, online articles, YouTube videos, online tutorials, games, quizzes, podcasts and revision aids. There may also be specific documents created by our Tutors.

5. Assignments

At the end of each unit on the course, your child will have to submit an assignment to their Tutor online. This is a chance for them to consolidate their understanding of the learning material covered to date.

6. Tutor feedback

There will be a feedback session for parents for 5 to 10 minutes if needed or by request.

Our Student Parents Say About Us

Although it is assumed that parents influence their children’s lives, little is known about how students navigate between their own expectations and their parents’ views of mathematics and how this navigation affects mathematical learning. Using an exemplary case of Philip, we illustrate how he made sense of his father’s high expectations related to his engagement with mathematics. There were three tensions evident in Philip’s stories about mathematics related to these expectations: the utility of mathematics for his future career; his expectations of doing well in mathematics; and the value of mathematics teachers. The results, elaborated on by the perspectives of the other students in Philip’s Year 12 class, shed light on the complexity and fluidity of secondary school students’ identities, in relationship to their mathematical engagement.
